Book Slam: London’s Literary Nightclub

Book Slam confidently describes itself as ‘London’s first/best/only literary nightclub’. This self-endorsement intrigued me. So much so that I found myself tramping up Lavender Hill towards The Clapham Grand, a local institute rivalled for seediness only by Infernos. My doubts about the Grand’s suitability to play host to literary greats (alumni include Irvine Welsh and Nick Hornby) soon dissipated. Tables and chairs replaced decks and dancing poles. WKDs were rendered a mere memory (although they live on in the smell of the threadbare carpet) and swapped for G&Ts. There was even a stall in the corner selling halloumi and lentil salad for a fiver.

What comes to mind when you think of Sierra Leone?

Most people will immediately think of the country’s civil war that raged throughout the 1990s, and recall the harrowing images of child soldiers and amputee victims. This conflict ended over a decade ago, yet we are still stuck with snapshots from this sad chapter in the country’s history.
