Book Slam confidently describes itself as ‘London’s first/best/only literary nightclub’. This self-endorsement intrigued me. So much so that I found myself tramping up Lavender Hill towards The Clapham Grand, a local institute rivalled for seediness only by Infernos. My doubts about the Grand’s suitability to play host to literary greats (alumni include Irvine Welsh and Nick Hornby) soon dissipated. Tables and chairs replaced decks and dancing poles. WKDs were rendered a mere memory (although they live on in the smell of the threadbare carpet) and swapped for G&Ts. There was even a stall in the corner selling halloumi and lentil salad for a fiver.
